 Preparation of a brief report based on key features of quantitative, qualitative and mixed research with examples


Quantitative Research:

  • Focus: Numbers and statistics. Aims to quantify phenomena, test hypotheses, and establish cause-and-effect relationships.
  • Data: Numeric, often collected through surveys, experiments, or observations with predetermined categories.
  • Analysis: Statistical methods, like calculating means, correlations, or regressions.
  • Strengths: Generalizability, precision, ability to test cause-and-effect.
  • Weaknesses: Limited understanding of subjective experiences, potential for oversimplification of complex issues.
  • Example: A study analyzing the relationship between study hours and exam scores using surveys and statistical analysis to determine correlation.

Qualitative Research:

  • Focus: Words, meanings, and subjective experiences. Aims to understand how people interpret and experience phenomena, and generate new insights or theories.
  • Data: Textual, often collected through interviews, observations, or document analysis.
  • Analysis: Thematic analysis, content analysis, discourse analysis, etc.
  • Strengths: Depth of understanding, rich insights into participant perspectives, adaptability to unforeseen findings.
  • Weaknesses: Difficulty in generalizing findings, subjective interpretation by researchers.
  • Example: A study exploring the emotional impact of chronic illness through in-depth interviews with patients to understand their experiences and challenges.

Mixed Methods Research:

  • Focus: Combining both quantitative and qualitative approaches to gain a more comprehensive understanding of a phenomenon.
  • Data: Can involve a mix of numerical and textual data, collected through various methods mentioned in quantitative and qualitative approaches.
  • Analysis: Can involve both statistical and thematic analysis depending on the data type and research question.
  • Strengths: Provides triangulation of findings, enhances validity and reliability, offers a richer and more nuanced understanding.
  • Weaknesses: Increased complexity in design and analysis, requires expertise in both quantitative and qualitative methods.
  • Example: A study investigating the effectiveness of a new educational program using surveys to measure academic performance and interviews to understand students' experiences and perspectives on the program. 

The best research method depends on your specific research question, objectives, and resources.This depend on the nature of your research, Level of existing knowledge and available resources.
